What is visible at the Knowe of Ramsay?
The Knowe of Ramsay survives as low, grass-covered remains rather than an intact chambered tomb to walk into. Historic surveys recorded a long cairn with fourteen compartments. This guide explains those records and the setting, with access notes to read before seeking it out.
The burial chamber
Callander and Grant excavated Ramsay in 1935. Earlier disturbance and stone removal had already badly damaged the cairn. [2] [3]
Thirteen pairs of upright slabs divided the 26.8-metre chamber into fourteen compartments. [1]
Excavators found fragments of human remains, animal bones, pottery and flint. [2] [3]
Possible enlargement
The chamber may have begun with ten compartments, with four added later. This remains a theory, and the date of any enlargement is uncertain. [3]
The surviving remains
Historic surveys describe a low grassy mound with some chamber stones showing. These are dated observations of what survived at the time. [2]
Ramsay stands on a natural terrace overlooking Lairo. Midhowe offers a useful comparison for understanding its long, divided chamber. [1] [2] [3]
